This new restaurant and wine bar in Brixton Village is at the back, along the alley with the African shops. It is a relation of the Donostia Social Club, which was a winner of the eatinbrixton public vote, when it was originally in Pop Brixton. It has now moved into multiple sites so clearly our public spotted the potential.

There are the usual tables and stools in the alley – this time high like in a bar. Inside it is exactly the same with tables for four or six, but now you are surrounded by a long bar and walls of wine.

Its heritage is good and their ethos is mainly about the wine but with more space than Donostia, which is great during a pandemic. The menu is split into nibbles, tapas, cheese (not just manchego) and cured meat (including Serrano, Iberico and chorizo) and dessert.

We chose Heritage tomato salad and sourdough with herb oil from the nibbles section and from the tapas menu, the special (squash stew with a roasted oyster mushroom, sage leaves and crispy onion) and octopus on a crumpet.

The sourdough was covered in herb oil – was like a pesto and it was finger licking good – mostly as it was hard to keep it on the bread. The heritage tomatoes were fresh with just a light dressing, which was also went well with the bread.

The other dishes were fantastic – the special had some chestnuts as well as butternut squash and this makes it feed really chunky. The onions look pretty but were not quite crispy enough but that didn’t matter as the mushroom was very good. Who needs meat!

When we saw octopus on a crumpet we had to try it. As you can see it was covered in mayonnaise, some green stuff and lots and lots of octopus. This can get rubbery but it was cut into small pieces and had been lightly barbecued. The black crumpet (made with Guinness) has a kiss of oil (been watching too much Jamie Oliver)  and is a foil for the octopus and ideal for mopping up the juice.

We washed everything down with a glass of Spanish Vermouth (Albarino from Galicia) and a glass of Stone Elephant Monastrell (Jumilla). We would have tried more, but it was a Saturday lunchtime and we were going out to dinner. There is a long list waiting for a return visit.

We wouldn’t want you to think we are always roaming around eating out, as we are still trying to be careful. But we had just been let out of quarantine and we wanted to get back into the swing of things. After an espresso we got the bill, which came with a complementary bowl of ham. Including a service charge of only 10%, the bill came to £38.00 and we are keen to try it again, hopefully before the inevitable London lockdown.
