We mentioned this cake shop in the 2020 Christmas post, but we like it so much we thought it needed a special place on EatinBrixton. We ordered a Red Velvet cake for a Dad’s birthday, which was gorgeous, but in this post we want to concentrate on the Canelé de Bordeaux. The styles and tastes are different almost every time and, for our readers of course, we decided to buy one of each – 13 on this visit – so we could try them all. These little cakes are cork-shaped fluted pastries and come from Bordeaux, where the nuns are said to have made them. Now you find them all over France. They have a caramelised crust and soft middle.

Momo – the chef from Atelier – lets his imagination run wild with different styles. We used to stick to the passion fruit ones, but have recently decided this is the chocolate season. As you can see in our photo the small indentation at the top allows you to fill it with small oreos, cream and a nut, or fruit, or chocolate creams and small crispy biscuits. Inside is a mixture of lemon curd, chocolate and hazel nuts or… or … we don’t want to spoil the surprise.

We thought that we would reach a conclusion about which ones we liked best – but we loved them all. Try some, or buy a large cake to share or just some of the lovely tarts on offer. The canneles are £2.95 each and a really tasty morsel. They make a change from mince pies, chocolate logs and stollen. They will keep a little while if you choose carefully.

They also sell bread!

Parissi is a relatively new café on Atlantic Road, just before it becomes Railton Road. It is a bit of a Tardis with a small shop that opens out to tables at the back. As you enter you pass a counter on the right loaded with home-made pastries and sandwiches.  At the back is a large table with benches at which you could easily seat 12, or 14 at a bit of a squeeze and other smaller tables if you’d rather eat tête-a-tête. The large table is promoted as being ideal for meetings or even a private event, although it’s also fine for individual diners. Continue reading

Vozar – restaurant, cafe, deli

To most of our readers this may be known as WAG (Wheat and Gluten free café), which was famous for its cakes. It has recently undergone a metamorphosis and become an evening restaurant as well with space for eating inside – a boon in these chilly months. The tables in the cosy space seat (or perhaps squeezes in) 12 people with space outside for about another ten. Each table is adorned in a pretty colourful table cloths and nothing more. This is an unusual restaurant that still caters for gluten free eating and can also do dairy free and vegetarian ….. although vegan might be a problem. The chef is from the Slovak Republic and has devoted his skill to perfecting meals that cater for those concerned with gluten. As one of us has problems we wished this sort of restaurant had been available 15 years ago when gluten free food was mainly acquired on prescription.

Cafe Sitifis – NOW CLOSED

11 Rushcroft Road, London SW2 1JS

We’ve been running this blog for less than a year and we’ve already covered almost 50 places where it’s worth eating out in Brixton. That’s 50 places just a short walk from where we live and I also work. There can’t be many places that offer such a rich diversity of food, most of it good and at reasonable prices. And that’s not counting the places we haven’t managed to get too yet. For example, we have yet to cover all the pubs that offer reasonable meals. (fn1)

But there is a drawback to all this richness. Sometimes it is simply difficult to keep up, which means that some places get missed out, even though they are excellent. So I was concerned when I read on the Urban 75 Brixton forum that Cafe Sitifis is “is struggling to stay open”. (see the thread here http://www.urban75.net/forums/threads/cafe-sitifis-review-rushcroft-road-great-for-kids.269737/) I’ve already been a couple of times and it’s great but I never got round to writing a post. I have to admit that I’m not as good at writing up reviews as other members of the team. So I’ve just been again, just to check it still delivers, and I’m pleased to report that it’s as good as ever.

Cafe Sitifis is named after a town in Algeria which is where the owner comes from. So the food is North African. What it offers is straight-forward – a range of meze served with flat bread and a choice of cakes. And coffee or tea to drink. Within that there’s a wide choice of dishes but, because it’s such good value, I’ve always had the Chef’s Special, which is simply a bit of everything crammed onto a plate.

I actually lose count of what’s on the plate but it’s uniformly excellent. But this time I had the vegetarian version which included hummus, olives, couscous, tomato and cucumber salad, aubergine salad, marinated peppers, dolmades, tzatziki, lentil salad and so on. It comes with a dressing that’s just asking to be mopped up with the bread. This latest time I had the mint tea but I’ve also had the coffee, which are both great. This all costs £7.45 but there are cheaper dishes with, in effect, your choice of meze out of what’s on offer. The fresh cakes and middle-eastern pastries all look good as well.

So this is a strong recommendation if you want a light meal at lunchtime or maybe just a coffee and a pastry during the day. However, it’s not open in the evening. It’s got a welcoming atmosphere and, more practically, wifi.

fn1. The coverage excludes the Brixton branches of chains, which we don’t cover as a matter of policy, and a handful of other places that we know from bitter experience simply aren’t worth including. But please let us have your recommendations if you think there is somewhere else in Brixton we should cover.
