Another week of lockdown 3.0 and we were still on the lookout for a new experience. Also the end of Italian week. We ended up with pizza! This place has a good score on Deliveroo and we hadn’t tried it for a while. We reviewed it some time ago (see here). The menu is certainly a little different to the run of the mill. As well as the margherita, napoli, marinara and funghi, they also had pistacchio, caramellata and salsiccia and porcini.

We chose a the salsiccia (tomato sauce, mozzarella fior di latte, Italian sausage, porcini mushrooms, grana padano, basil) and the pistacchio (mozzarella fior di latte, crema di pistacchio, mortadella, crushed pistachios, basil) – look carefully if you are vegetarian – the little symbols have a key at the bottom of the menu.

The pistacchio one was definitely nutty and the basil was a great smell and taste. I am not fond of mortadella, but it was good on the reheated portion the next day.

The salsiccia version was lovely – hot occasionally with a bite of of the Italian sausage and the rounded taste of the mushrooms.

You can see that they are not so particular about having them perfectly round, but I suppose it gives them more of a artisan look. Anyway, we enjoyed them both, but mostly on the following day. The reason was they were a little burnt on one side and we ate that one on the first day leaving the softer, less carbonised pieces to the next day. We know a pizza oven can be a little unpredictable but …. check the underside before tucking in.

The bill, without any drinks and before adding a tip, came to £29.71, good value when you have leftovers.

Today is #BlackPound day – we will be visiting another black owned business tonight but thought we should let you know of a long-standing favourite – Negril provides authentic Jamaican food in a friendly atmosphere. See our last review here Link. It’s some time since we last visited. It’s always busy and up Brixton Hill so we always book. In lockdown we decided to put it to the takeaway test. Continue reading

Another week, another relatively new pizzeria, opening earlier this year. This time it’s on Brixton Hill, halfway up on the stretch that the New York Times, no less, has described as “successfully eschewing the onslaught of gentrification and proving that cool doesn’t have to come with a high price tag” (see here). There’s quite a lot of journalistic licence here but if you want a friendly neighbourhood eating place without any great pretensions, this might save you the walk down to central Brixton. One thing that was noticeable when we ate there was a distinct shift in the customers, compared to places in the centre of Brixton, in that it was more family orientated, and rather less ‘hipsterish’. Kata Kata

kk02address: 134 Brixton Hill, Brixton, London SW2

Opening times – 10am to 10pm everyday

You may have overeaten during the Christmas break and/or are now suffering from a lack of cash so we thought that we would help with a few recommendations that will not break the bank. This one resulted from a lack of planning after seeing the early Saturday showing of Fantastic Beasts in Streatham. We headed back to Brixton with one thing on our mind – food. Our original destination, Negril, was full to bursting but next door there is this restaurant/cafe. At any other time we might have ignored it – now very glad we didn’t. This cafe serves coffee and pancakes (savoury galettes and sweet crepes) and was totally empty when we visited. We assume this is fare for lunch or a late afternoon snack but now we know it hits the spot for dinner too.

There are a few tables and chairs on two levels and it is all very Zen. In the back there is a library of worthy philosophy and self help books and in addition to the welcome fan heater there is a perfumed mist pumped into the air. Galettes can be cooked in front of your eyes but we preferred the locality of the fan heater.

The food is all worthily vegetarian or vegan. Their galette is a buckwheat pancake and we think cheese is essential so opted for vegetarian options. We chose a Farmer which has free range egg, cheese and spinach and a Red Goat (spinach, beetroot, goat cheese and sweet potato. Both came with an interesting salad (carrot, bean shoots, beetroot and more spinach). Flavours were subtle but interesting and both were slightly sweet with dressing and herbs. They were also huge and definitely hit that empty spot leaving us no room for more. As they cool the galette does become a little tough so we gave up with the knife and fork, got rid of some crusty bits and picked them up.kk01

We washed them down with jasmine tea and an apple and ginger juice.

This is definitely comfort food and we will not be rushing back just yet although great to know it is likely to have an empty seat on a cold, damp night. It is also relatively cheap with the total bill being only £16.20 and it could be cheaper if we had chosen differently.

This establishment has seen Mick Jagger, George Lansbury (Labour Leader in ‘30s), Bertrand Russell and Giggs (Peckham rapper) and now a contingent from eatinbrixton. We are, of course, reviewing the restaurant in the heart of Brixton Prison that is run by The Clink Charity (link here) and staffed by prisoners working towards their NVQs in Hospitality and Catering. They provide breakfast and lunch Monday to Friday and we opted for the lunchtime sitting at 12.
