This was a Saturday night pop-up that took place at the Brixton Pound Cafe. Following a tip-off on Instagram, we booked on-line through the eatwith.com website, not really knowing what to expect.  What we got was food that’s described as being from Sri Lanka to the streets of London and is aimed being representative of all the different people who call Sri Lanka a home. Craft Beer

Beer02Locally brewed ‘craft’ beer is now definitely a thing and, seemingly, in danger of getting out of control. So in the interests of helping our readers make sense of what’s happening, two of us set out on a Saturday lunchtime to try what was on offer locally. We focused on the three breweries in Brixton of course, although you only need to go as far as Herne Hill to find further options.

Booma

This describes itself as a new concept in “the coming together of delicious Indian food and great craft beer”. It serves northern Indian food using a tandoor oven but then pairs them with different craft beers. This is quite an art, as most Indian food is spicy and would mask the overall flavour of the beer. They solve this by not making the Indian food that spicy – delicate would be the best way of describing it, so don’t go here to get a huge flavour boost. Continue reading →

A couple of weeks we were invited down for a taster session at the newly opened Pop Brixton to find out what we can expect from the latest foodie venture in our beloved town.

Described as a “pioneering new space created with the local community in mind to showcase the best and most exciting independent start-ups and businesses from Brixton and Lambeth” this place hasn’t appeared without its criticisms. However in terms of bringing a whole host of new faces to the restaurant community in the now go-to London food destination it is very welcomed by us. And we were actually quite impressed. One thing to note is that even though they had in mind to keep all the vendors local I’m not sure how much of the customers are… For more information on the project, check out their website here.

After having meant to visit this pub since it reopened many months ago we headed down on Thursday evening to finally check the place out. The reason it probably took a bit longer for us to pay a visit is mainly because of its location. About a 10 minute walk from Brixton station, if you are hungry and don’t fancy a walk you probably won’t make it down there as there are plenty of options much closer to (our) home. Located opposite the infamous ‘after party’ location for Brixton Academy gigs, Jamm, this isn’t a part of town that has experienced the surge in restaurants and bars that central Brixton has. That’s why it is quite nice to get out of the main hub. Located on the corner of Brixton road, just by the entrance to Slade Gardens, the Crown and Anchors front is a welcome and shiny addition to the run down and very empty shops that line that end of Brixton Road. The pub is long and thin with high ceilings with plenty of tables, although I don’t see where a big group could really sit together without some manoeuvring.
