This is a burger joint unlike any other – no cows were involved in their production as they are vegan. It’s in Pop Brixton, on the ground floor and down the aisle on the left as you go in. It looks much like any other take-away food joint, with some stools to sit on if you want to eat in.
There are four or five different kinds of burgers. We chose their signature “halo 8burger” which has two 1/8 lb patties layered with diced white onion, and melted “100% plant-based American style cheese”. A completely vegetable meal. The only bovine mention is the slice of “beef tomato”. The other was the Smokey Carolina BBQ Special (the burger, smoked Gouda style cheese, Brixton Ale battered onion strips, BBQ sauce and mayo). We also had one portion of chips with pink salt.
We enjoyed both burgers and the chips were good too. I couldn’t believe there wasn’t meat on my bun by the taste. We ate inside and it was dark.
So what is it made of this burger? Well we are told via the Internet that there’s plant based protein – mainly from peas, some beetroot juice – so it bleeds, and corn. They are bought in from Beyond Burger and you can order them online and also get the cooked variety delivered on Deliveroo.
We had a couple of bottles of Brixton Lager and the bill came to £31. Pretty steep for Tuesday fast food, but it did make us feel virtuous. At least until we realized the pink salt came from the Himalayas and the burgers come from California.
