So it’s our second week and I’m desperate for some sushi. Easier said than done, at least if you are quarantined and you want half decent sushi. There is good sushi in Brixton, but if you want straightforward delivery and a wide choice you have to go further afield. So it’s Deliveroo and Tsunami at Clapham North. It’s only later I spot on their website that you can order direct, although I haven’t looked to see if it would have been any cheaper.
Six selections for two of us is plenty. I chose ikura-salmon roe nigiri (that’s the block of rice with the fish eggs on top); oshinko maki (that’s the little rolls); and a scallop and smelt egg temaki ( that’s the stuffed cone shape). Oshinko is Japanese pickled radish, to which I am addicted, but it’s not always on sushi menus.
My partner went for unagi-smoked eel nigiri; tuna nigiri; and an eel and cucumber temaki. You get two pieces of nigiri and six pieces of maki in a serving. You don’t need anything else, as it comes accompanied by wasabi, pickled ginger and cute little bottles of soy sauce. You can order extra portions of these, but we found there was plenty. You also get some wooden chopsticks.
Well this was plenty to satisfy my sushi craving and it was good. The rice was a bit softer than I prefer, but well within the acceptable range. The only slight complaint is that the restaurant should make it clearer to the delivery service that the trays need to be kept flat – when carried on their edge the items need to be disentangled on arrival.
So far so good, but it’s not exactly cheap for what is essentially a light meal, not including any drinks. Including a tip for the rider, it come out at around £46.00.
