This is another black owned restaurant that got in touch following our Instagram post on black businesses in Brixton – see here. So we decided to give it try on our Friday night takeway slot. They don’t have their own website and we ordered through Deliveroo. But their own Instagram bio says you can also order via DM. We ordered earlier in the day so cannot comment on how quickly the food will arrive.

It’s one of the earlier businesses to open in the renovated arches in Atlantic Road. It’s not your usual fish and chip shop and in normal times the emphasis might be as much on the cocktails as on the food. But they do have prawn, calamari or squid and chips on the relatively short menu. If you want to splash out (no pun intended), then order the lobster boil in the bag (lobster, king prawns, shell prawns, crab, potatoes, blue swim crab and corn on the cob) at £60, or the Boil in the bag crab (snow crab, king prawns, shell prawns, potatoes, blue swim crab) at £30. So it’s Friday and it’s Fish and Chips. We have previously reviewed Fish and Chip takeaways (see here) and also visited Chip Shop itself a while ago (last review here). The menu for takeaways is much reduced currently, but we chose a medium portion of fish and chips and a larger portion of peri-peri chicken (opting for medium hot) with chips, just to spice it up a bit. Delivery was organised direct with the restaurant, which is good, but at the price of being a little slow. You just need to take it into account when you order.

A medium portion is half a chicken and also includes some healthy roast tomatoes. The chicken was succulent, but not really as spicy as we had expected. So lovely that we saved the smaller piece to have cold in a salad the following day.

There was also two pieces of fish in really nice and crispy batter, which we easily polished off.

We should have learnt our lesson by now that chips, unless really, really crispy when they leave the restaurant, will be just soggy by the time they reached us. These were not as bad as some, but they steam in the packaging and while these were tasty, they came out as a little limp. 

The whole meal was around £20.00, not including the tip. But this was a bargain, given the amount of food and the leftovers providing a second meal with a proper Ceasar. We will be back again, but our list of potential takeaway and deliveries gets longer, so perhaps not for a little while.

Bird describes itself as London’s original fried chicken and waffle joint – a description to the point when you look at the menu (although some might dispute the “original”). You have to like fried chicken, which comes as burgers, alone, with sauce (sticky soy, buffalo, Korean, blue cheese, BBQ, honey ginger) and in a waffle. We were craving something a bit spicy and if you choose the best hygiene standards on Deliveroo and ask for a nearby curry, you come to Bombay Kitchen. It’s at the top of Brixton Hill, tucked way in New Park Road. And apologies for the pictures below being a little wobbly, but we were a good way through the meal before we thought about taking the photos.

The menu is enormous, which usually puts us off. But we have never tried this establishment before, so as a service to you the reader, we ranged widely. We ended up with: a Tandoori Mixed Grill, Chicken Tikka Massala, Tarka Dhal, Brinjai Bhaji (aubergine), Pilau Rice, two Naans, and two Plain Papadums.

Needless to say we had some left over (see picture below), which was plenty for a subsequent lunch. The empty box is the aubergine dish, reflecting the fact that it was the tastiest. We also enjoyed the dhal, but the chicken in the masala sauce was really tough and its vibrancy would put anyone off. And while the meat in the mixed grill was tasty, any grilling that had been applied was lost under the vegetables. The papadoms were broken when they arrived, but were absolutely fine and the second naan – well we are going to have that as a novel form of toastie with this lot in it.

There was nothing offensive about this meal, but we did have to add salt and we should have been braver and gone for more chilli hotness. So it’s buyer beware – this is anglicised fare, even though the recipes come from all over Indian subcontinent. So take courage – when they say mild they mean it.

The total cost was nearly £50 with the tip, so not a cheap Friday night, although we are still eating it on the Wednesday.

We are carrying on with our take away and delivery reviews and this week we went to the 2019 winner of the EatinBrixton Favourite Restaurant – from our annual public vote. Our full review was back in 2015 – see here. This is not the cheapest takeaway and you do have to pick it up. No cows were involved in the production of these burgers as they are vegan. We reviewed it a while ago (see here). We decided to try it again because: (1) it is close by; (2) when we were hungry it was open; and (3) most importantly, you didn’t have to book several days in advance. Every now and again we need some sweetness in our lives and Ice Cream Union based in Bermondsey can provide it with home delivered ice creams. They have a great assortment from worthy vegan sorbets (rhubarb, blackberry, blackcurrant, blood orange, cucumber etc) to the creamy strawberry, vanilla, chocolate. But they also roam into unusual flavours like breton caramel, peanut butter, matcha and cornflake. The list is long but has helpful notation for gluten free, vegan, soy, egg, nuts, alcohol (surprisingly in the cucumber sorbet) and milk options.

They deliver in batches and four is the minimum. We ordered salted caramel, lemon pie, fior de latte and coffee. They come in polystyrene boxes and so far we have tried two of them. The lemon pie (contains egg and milk) tastes like the best lemon curd, sharp but rich. The salted caramel went well with the rich chocolate cake we made to use up some of the cocoa powder we found in the back of the cupboard.

They come quickly and are filling the space in the freezer which used to house the frozen peas. We are really looking forward to trying the rest of them on these warmer days. You can pay by cash or card – there is a card payment handheld with your driver. They are expensive – £10 per large tub but worth it for decadence, especially when there is no Easter egg delivery. The cost for four large tubs is £40 including delivery.
